Dark Cream

Back to Previous Page

HISTORY: This is a variation of the Cream which was first produced by Mr. Fred Lewistka, when developing the Fawn, but disposed of as light Fawns. Established by Mr. Levitt Hunt and Mr. Jack Wedderburn, of Sydney. In 1997 the Federation of Zebra Finch Societies Australia accepted the Dark Cream standard.

GENETICS: DOMINANT (SEX-LINKED)

  • Dark Cream x Dark Cream = Dark Cream cocks & hens and Fawn cocks & hens
  • Dark Cream x Fawn = Dark Cream cocks & hens and Fawn cocks & hens *
  • Dark Cream x Grey = Grey/fawn & Dilute Blue/fawn cocks and Dark Cream & Fawn hens
  • Grey x Dark Cream = Grey/fawn & Dilute Blue/fawn cocks and Grey & Dilute Blue hens

The reverse mating will give the same results.

It is recommended that the Grey & Dilute Blue birds produced not be used in future matings with Grey or Dilute Blue.

It is said that 'double factor' and 'single factor' birds are produced. To date evidence produced suggests that all Dark Creams are 'single factor'; 'double factor' birds do not develope pass the embryo stage.

SHOW FAULTS:

COCK

  • Body colour too light
  • Markings too dark or light

HEN

  • Body colour too light

AVAILABILITY: Common

GENERAL: Dark Creams are the result of combining the sex-linked Fawn with the 'dominant dilute' Dilute Blue; they are simply the darker version of Cream. Anyone interested in Creams should start with the best birds possible, preferable a cock, and breed through Fawns.
